Community Service

Students are required to complete a minimum of 100 community service hours throughout their 4 years at I.E.K.H.S.  Community involvement encourages students to develop an understanding of the roles that they play in their community and a greater sense of belonging within the community.  Students may start accumulating community involvement hours in the summer before they enter Grade 9.   To be validated for credit as community service,  all community service projects be completed during a student’s non-instructional time and that no compensation be awarded.

  1.  Community service hours MAY NOT be performed for a student’s family member or a for-profit organization, except for hospitals and/or veterinary clinics. Non-profit organizations are organizations that do not receive profits, or revenue, for the services that they provide.
  2. Fundraising, except for non-profit charities, do not count for community service.
  3. Services rendered for any kind of disciplinary action do not count for community service.

To receive recorded credit, students must submit written verification of the community service performed with an approved agency to the guidance counselor. This should include a letter on the official letterhead from the recipients of the service indicating the dates and number of hours of service, as well as the duties completed. Appropriate signatures are required for verification purposes.
